Photography from the analyst's couch: It's like an outside force (of a muse, not a psychosis) that can make me get down on hands and knees in the dirt or the mud to catch a less common view of the world. It's the reason (not the rationalization) for the hours sweltering under a camo-drape and hunkered down in a cramped hide at a swift fox den, or lying frozen and corpse-like on a midwinter's snow bank near the entrance to a pygmy rabbit's burrow ... click here for the full excerpt

Photography from the analyst's couch: It's like an outside force (of a muse, not a psychosis) that can make me get down on hands and knees in the dirt or the mud to catch a less common view of the world. It's the reason (not the rationalization) for the hours sweltering under a camo-drape and hunkered down in a cramped hide at a swift fox den, or lying frozen and corpse-like on a midwinter's snow bank near the entrance to a pygmy rabbit's burrow. It's a trigger (but not a sort or order or symmetry dysfunction) for my mind to remap habitat boundaries as a jigsaw puzzle, where individual pieces are analyzed and checkboxes flagged with alerts for the flora and fauna that might be discovered. And (unlike a dissociative identity disorder) while my conscious mind drives the route or walks the path, it's a tool my subconscious uses to scan for targets that represent and define what I attach to my life and to myself. Photo How To's

Large projects like eField Wyoming require a great deal of organization and reproducibility. The 10's of thousands of images involved demanded a good file naming convention and filing system. And photographing plants in Wyoming's wind called for special techniques to increase the chances of success.

Click this Photo How To's link to see how I used MS-Excel, Adobe Photoshop, a Portable Studio and a Double-Flash Copy Stand to meet these requirements.

Miscellaneous Video

This area is under construction - but here's a little video clip to view in the meantime.

Blue Grouse - Crazy Love

I happened upon this Love-Crazed Blue Grouse one spring morning while on a short hike through a stand of Lodgepole Pine in the Medicine Bow National Forest. He followed along after me for about an hour and then flew onto the hood of my Yukon when I got in to drive away. I’m not exactly sure what his intentions were, but his behavior appeared to be that of a love-struck bird. Apparently birds of a feather don’t always flock together.
