Blacks Fork River Map

This is by far the best section through the Red Desert on the Blacks Fork River. The vegetation here is dominated by sage brush, grease wood, rabbit brush, and buffalo berry. Like parts of the middle section, this trip also has numerous nesting sites for golden eagles, hawks, and falcons. The put-in is at a rest area on I-80 at mile #77.

Just downstream from the rest stop and after passing by the base of The Bluffs and Beacon Light Hill is a small diversion dam. About one hour below is a long island and a small uplift on the right with a Swainson Hawk nest. Below here the river begins alternating between large bluffs on the left and right.

Three hours from the put-in is a single tree growing on a broad floodplain (nice camping area). Three hours further is the base of the sand covered Massacre Hill and just below is the W-530 Bridge (mile marker #15). Float time from I-80 to here is about seven hours. If you don't take out here, it's another ten miles to the Green River Confluence and Flaming Gorge. The best access to the confluence is on the Lost Dog Road off W-530 at mile #10. If you decide to paddle down the reservoir, the next landing is at Buckboard Crossing off W-530 at mile #25.
