This trip begins by turning off US-89 at Gros Ventre Junction (mile #162) and going northeast toward Kelly. Here you can see East Gros Ventre Butte and Miller Butte to the south. To the west are the Tetons and to the east is Sheep Mountain in the Gros Ventre Mountains. After about five miles, you pass by the Gros Ventre Campground and the road swings east to Kelly. The road then turns north for one mile to a junction. Here you can take the Antelope Flats Road to US-89 at mile #168.

Turn east and past Kelly Warm Springs. The road then begins to climb a bit (leaving the national park and entering the national forest) and you come to an interpretive site for the Gros Ventre Slide. You then travel along Lower Slide Lake to the Atherton Creek Campground and a boat ramp. Here the pavement ends.

The dirt road continues along the lake for about one mile. You then cross Horsetail Creek and the road climbs to an overlook high above the river. Here you can see the Red Hills along to the northeast. The road then drops down to the Gros Ventre River. A half mile after crossing the river is the Crystal Creek Campground. Just after crossing Crystal Creek is a small junction. Here you can go south to the Crystal Creek trailhead. Stay to the northeast, then east past the Gray Hills, as the road follows along the river to Upper Slide Lake (seven miles).

At Upper Slide Lake, NF30410 turns northeast across the river to the Game Warden Patrol Cabin, but continue east to the next couple of junctions. Here a road turns off to the Goosewing Ranger Station and a bit further is the Goosewing Creek Trailhead. The dry weather road now becomes much less traveled. Two miles further is the Soda Lake Road and you have a good view of the Fish Creek drainage coming in from the northeast. The next five miles to the trailhead at the end of road follows along the meandering loops of the Gros Ventre River as it travels through a beautiful mountain valley.

Scott, Kelly, and Linda (alias Jack, Janett, and Krissy) hoping to catch the next quake at the Gros Ventre Slide.
