This trip begins by turning off US-14 at mile #55 north of Arvada. (Here you can turn south on W-341 to Arvada and I-90. See page 162.) Take the Lower Powder River Road (S-269) north along the river and through a small valley. (Nice drive.) After about five miles the valley pinches in a bit and you begin traveling between the L-Quarter Circle Hills on the west and the Powder River Breaks on the east. Eight miles further north the road follows along Clear Creek for a bit and then crosses the Powder River just above the confluence.
The road then loops around through some breaks (past ponderosa pine and cedar trees) and four miles from the river crossing is the county line. Here you can see part of Hells Half Acre Canyon to the north. Three miles from the county line, you cross LX Bar Creek to a junction (two more miles). Here the SA Road turns south to US-14 near Spotted Horse.
Continue north across SA Creek and after five miles you enter Montana. Three miles from the state line, you cross Bitter Creek to a junction. Here you can continue north across Dry Creek and travel along the Powder River to Broadus, Montana.
Turn south on the Bitter Creek Road and you enter a small canyon. This is a nice area with cedar and ponderosa pine trees on the hillsides and cottonwood, peachleaf willow, and boxelder along the creek. After three miles you enter Wyoming and four miles further you cross Rosie Draw.
The valley now begins to widen a bit. After about three miles you cross Bitter Creek and four miles further you cross Armstrong Prong. During the next six miles, you pass by several roads going east, but continue southeast across the rolling hills to a junction (14 miles from the stateline). Here the Beason Road turns north to Montana.
Turn south on the Recluse Road and cross the East Fork Bitter Creek. Four miles further, you cross the head of Bitter Creek to another junction. Here you can take the Bay Horse Road (Woods Road) east to W-59 (see page 160). Stay south on the pavement and toward Horse Creek Butte. After four miles you enter Recluse and five miles further south you hit US-14 at mile #76.
